A shipyard crane in India collapsed on Saturday 1 August killing 11 people. All the victims were in the cabin of the crane, local news reported.

The 70 tonne capacity rail mounted port crane, made by Anupam Industries, was being tested at a government-owned shipyard in southern India. The crane, built in India by the Mumbai-based company, was installed two years ago.

The Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) yard is in the port city of Vishakhapatnam in the state of Andhra Pradesh. It is used to build and repair ships, submarines and offshore structures.

India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said a departmental inquiry committee has been set up to establish the cause of the crane collapse.
